Pitri Paksha Begins on September 8, 2025

Pitri Paksha is a period of about 15-days observed during the Krishna Paksha of the Ashwin month (North). It is a time to remember our deceased ancestors.

In many parts of India, it is common to observe hawan, daan, tarpan in the name of the pitris and to offer them food.

When to do Shradh for Pitris?

Most of you may know when to observe the Shradh of your ancestors. It is usually the tithi on which they left for heavenly abode.

If your pitris left their flesh bodies on Pratipada tithi, their shradh will be observed on Pratipada only.

What If I Don't Know the Exact date and time of their death?

If you are unaware of the dates and times of the death of your ancestors or you have to do multiple shradhs, you may want to do it on Sarv Pitri Amavasya.

This is the last day of the Pitri Paksha when you can do tarpan for everyone.

Can Women do Pitri Paksha Tarpan?

Yes, women can do Pitri tarpan.

Should women do pitri tarpan only for their in-laws?

Women are a bridge between two families and you can remember and pay your respects to pitris of your maternal home as well as your marital home.

Does everyone have to be available during Pitri Tarpan?

Ideally, it would be great if all members of the family are available for the pitri tarpan. However, if some people cannot make it, don't shame or embarrass them.

Who is Pitri Tarpan most helpful for?

 

If you have Pitri dosha in the kundli (which can be seen in the charts of multiple family members) or are going through inexplicable blockages in your work, you must do Pitri tarpan.

Additionally, people with weak Sun and Moon in their charts, must also perform this tarpan.

If you have some significant 12th house placements or a strong Ketu impact, you must also pay your respect to the pitris.

When is Sarv Pitri Amavasya in 2025?

This year, Sarv Pitri Amavasya is on 21st September, 2025. You can do tarpan for all your ancestors together on this day as this is the last day of the pitri paksha. If you are unable to perform shradh before this date or wanted to do a tarpan for all your ancestors together, do it on this day.
